| The
Utah Education Association believes that:
- Every
child deserves a fully qualified, professional teacher.
- What
parents want and children need are teachers who are caring, competent,
and enthusiastic.
- Competent
means they know what they’re teaching and how to teach it.
- A
person may enter the classroom through alternative routes, but all
teachers should ultimately get the education and experience they
need to be fully certified.
- We
think all teachers should be held to high standards.
- We
support a comprehensive approach to teacher quality, including:
- Strong
preparation program - in subject matter and how to teach.
- Entry-level
testing.
- Ongoing
professional development.
- Mentor
and induction programs.
- Evaluation
(a fair, reliable review process
- We must
have competitive salaries to attract and retain the kind of teachers
parents want and students deserve.
- On
average, teachers begin their careers earning $8,000 below other
college graduates. After 20 to 30 years and a master’s degree,
the gap widens to $32,000.
