Reviewing my first term as UEA President, I knew that my years as a classroom teacher and my work as an elected local leader gave me the knowledge of issues and experience as an Association activist to be successful as your statewide leader. Nothing could have prepared me for the enormity of the challenges and opportunities our organization has faced in these 2 years. At the beginning of our fight to defeat vouchers, I told members; ‘we have the chance to change the future of public education not only in Utah but for the nation.’ Utah’s teachers played a major role in the victory against vouchers. I learned many things during the campaign: the power of teachers when they act with one purpose, the importance of partnerships with other organizations, the need to reach out to the public as allies for our public schools. There is much to do to capture the momentum of our victory. I ask for your vote and your help as we work to strengthen our profession and advance the cause of public education.
