Jerry's Thoughts:
"What I learned about UEA that surprised me: "I think what surprised me the most was the influence that the UEA has with the State legislative process. As I have gotten to know our Legislators better and in an effort to further the needs of public education. I was surprised how they feel that the UEA is the most influential group on the Hill. Another thing that has surprised me is how varied each district is with their relationship to the district administration. Once I was elected representing four different districts, I realized just how varied each district is and how we need to work even harder to make sure that each district can give teachers and students what they need to continue the important work that we do with a positive direction and attitude."
What I value most about the Association: "I am a firm believer in the Association, in it's efforts to bring a quality education to every child in the nation. The influential effect that the association has on the local level with negotiations in each individual district. Even though we are a union, I feel that the needs and the work of the association is so much more benevolent, because we give a voice to the voiceless children who are the future leaders of our country, businesses, and our world. When we succeed, so do those who will follow us and lead us in the future."
How members might begin to be more active in the Association: "The recent voucher fight that we have gone through did activate many of our complacent and non-active members. I hope and think that this in and of itself is or should be a wake-up call as to the importance of getting politically involved. It is up to us to change the face and the direction of the Utah Legislature. I think that the battle that we have recently gone through will also send the message of how vital it is that our voice be heard. It was easy in the past to sit in the comforts of our classroom and let others do the work for us. But this last battle has alerted ALL members as to just how important THEIR voice and involvement is in the current times."
