Professional Ethics for Educators
In the Community
- Respect
parents and convey that respect to them.
- Be
sensitive about controversial issues such as political elections, local
debates, etc. Be as neutral and objective as possible.
- Support
the community. Attend the school carnival, sporting and cultural
events, and PTSA meetings. Parents will appreciate knowing you are involved.
- Avoid
getting too personal with parents. Don't act as a counselor to parents
and their problems. Respect their privacy. Use your professional peers
in the school to assist if the situation warrants it.

- Establish
and maintain good communication with parents. Parents like to hear
good things about their children. Contact them often. A positive telephone
call has an amazing impact. Make it a top priority! If you have a confrontation
with a student, be sure to contact the parents immediately and explain
the situation before the student arrives home crying or upset. This
will keep minor problems from becoming major ones. Also, inform your
principal. It is inadvisable to invite students to your home for parties,
counseling, tutoring, etc.
