Standards of Ethical Conduct for Utah Educators
Professional ETHICAL CONDUCT
The Utah educator shall endeavor to maintain the dignity of the profession by respecting
and obeying the law, demonstrating personal integrity, and exemplifying
honesty.
- The educator
shall not intentionally misrepresent official policies of the school
district or educational organization and shall clearly distinguish those
views from personal attitudes and opinions.
- The educator
shall demonstrate integrity and fiscal responsibility with public monies
entrusted to his/her care.
- The educator
shall not use institutional or professional privileges for personal
or partisan advantage.
Professional PRACTICES & PERFORMANCE
The Utah
educator shall assume responsibilities for professional teaching practices
and professional performance and shall continually strive to demonstrate
competence.
- The educator
shall adhere to the terms of a contract or appointment.
- The educator
shall comply with Utah State Board of Education regulations and applicable
state and federal laws.
Ethical Conduct Toward PROFESSIONAL COLLEAGUES
The Utah
educator, in exemplifying ethical relations with colleagues, shall accord
just and equitable treatment to all members of the profession.
- The educator shall
not reveal confidential information concerning colleagues unless disclosure
serves professional purposes or is required by law.
- The educator shall
not make false statements and shall use integrity in all communication.
- The educator shall
adhere to local school board policies and legal statutes.
Ethical Conduct Toward STUDENTS
The Utah
educator, in accepting a position of public trust, shall respect the dignity,
individuality, and culture of each student.
- The educator shall
treat each student with consideration and fairness and shall seek to
resolve problems including discipline according to law, school board
policy, and procedural due process.
- The educator shall
not intentionally expose the student to disparagement.
- The educator shall
not reveal confidential information concerning students unless disclosure
serves professional purposes or is required by law.
- The educator shall
make reasonable effort to protect the student from conditions detrimental
to learning, health, safety, or ethical/moral values.
- The educator shall
endeavor to present facts without distortion.
- The educator shall
assist the students to be productive citizens.
- The educator shall
not exclude from participation in any program, deny benefits, or grant
an advantage to any student on the basis of race, color, creed, gender,
disabling condition, national origin, marital status, political or religious
beliefs, family, and social or cultural background.
Ethical Conduct Toward PARENTS & COMMUNITY
The
Utah educator, in fulfilling citizenship responsibilities in the community,
shall cooperate with parents and others to improve the public schools
of the community and promote the image and standards of educators.
- The educator shall
not interfere with a colleague's exercise of political and citizenship
rights and responsibilities.
- The educator shall
communicate to parents and/or legal guardians information which should
be revealed in the interest of the student.
- The educator shall
endeavor to understand and respect the cultural diversity of the community
and its students.
- The educator shall
incorporate various cultures within the curriculum by teaching and modeling
respect and acceptance for diversity.
- The educator shall
exemplify a positive role in school public relations.
